 Executive Director’s Message
 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
So, Mr. Mayor and City Council, How Much onger Are You Going to Babysit Renters?!!
LA
Convention Center. I want to say thank you to all of you who were able to make the trip out to Pasadena and join us that day. After about 2-years of pandemic- related, mostly remote working and anti-congregating in big groups (of course, for me, there was the occasional Lakers game), I was so pleased to once again speak to you, our members, in person and without a mask, and not address you through the small screen on my laptop computer! Standing in front of a group of people, on stage, behind a microphone, and with PowerPoint displayed right there felt awesome! I cannot wait until the next opportunity to meet and greet our members in person.

And so here we are today. And some of this pandemic restriction stuff continues...really?!! We still have in place moratoriums on evictions and rent increases in place within the County of Los Angeles in some form and severity until at least June 30, 2023, and who knows if the County will extend it further. Of course, the City of Los Angeles continues under an emergency order, and as a result, its moratoriums on evictions and rent increases remain with the so-called “rent increase freeze” having a long, one-year “tail” after the emergency order is eventually lifted, if ever.
But I highly doubt that we’ve seen the last of these moratoriums, folks. Stick around because there just might be a bad flu or cold outbreak soon, and these now tools of the government trade, eviction moratoriums and rent freezes, could someday return. You’ve heard the constant bobbing and weaving of the “ups and downs” of the latest and greatest COVID strain, well how about more eviction moratorium to help with that! And, what’s up with this “monkey pox virus” thing? Could that be yet another “thing” to put us into economic shutdown, eviction moratoriums and more stealing from us? They say the monkey thing is mild, but that’s not been any reason to forgo moratoriums when it comes to the latest, mild strain of COVID.
Listen, I get your phone calls, emails, and sometimes your cards and letters you write to me. I know how it has been and how you feel. I feel for you, especially those of you who have gone through “hell and back” dealing with jerk tenants, tenant deadbeats, and unfair (unless you are a tenant) regulations during the past two years. For many of you, these past two plus years have been hell...and still the pain and suffering continue albeit to a lesser degree, but it

The excitement of a large, in-person event also gave me an opportunity to reflect on the past more than two years of pandemic related regulations. As I was looking back at the beginning in early 2020, I thought to myself who in their right mind would have ever believed or anticipated that our government would shut down our entire economy and, for those of us in rental housing, the restaurant business, and several other industries, literally shut off our revenue stream! The debate will continue for years I’m sure about how much government’s reaction to the pandemic helped, and we will someday calculate how many were hurt financially and by how much from the resulting economic fallout, the social and mental impacts suffered, and how far behind our younger generation might now be at the hands of schools that were shuttered and from classroom hours were missed.
