Research has shown that the single best step we can take to improve our mood and outlook is to review the reasons we should be grateful, including our bonds with loved ones and friends, whatever physical or intellectual strengths we may have inherited, any fortunate circumstances into which we may have been born, the resources we have managed to accumulate, and having overcome whatever obstacles we have encountered in life. Constructing a “Gratitude List” to review each morning or when we are troubled can brighten our day.
Cognitive behavioral psychotherapy (CBT), is the only psychological treatment approach that can be considered “evidence-based.” A review of 325 different research studies involving more than 9000 subjects found CBT to be effective in treating depression (adult and adolescent), anxiety disorder, and social phobia (David, D., et al., “Why Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy Is the Gold Standard of Psychotherapy,” Frontiers of Psychiatry, 01-29-2018). CBT works by challenging the dysfunctional thoughts that cause us distress and inhibit self-assertion. And focused positivity strategy is the most efficient and effective
method of enhancing both our success in life and our peace of mind.
In the self-help book, “Focused Positivity: The Path to Success and Peace of Mind” a focused positivity strategy is covered. The book is based on what research has discovered about the connection between our thoughts and actions, our relationships with each other, habit change, relaxation, assertiveness, and even the competition between the two hemispheres of our brains.
Nearly seventy years ago Norman Vincent Peale, a Christian Minister in Manhattan, wrote “The Power of Positive Thinking,” which became one of the most popular self- help books of all time. Research has shown his premise to be correct: positive thinking enhances health, creativity, and even relationships. Peale’s book, however, is based on unconventional religious views and lacks an attainable method of change. In contrast, Focused Positivity presents a systematic strategy of improving our perspective that is accessible to everyone, regardless of background or faith. Dr. Dale Jorgenson, Professor of Psychology Emeritus of Cal State Long Beach, has described Focus Positivity as “a must-read for anyone who wants greater life success or peace of mind—or hopes to help others find the same.”
The author, John F. Tholen, PhD, is a Retired Psychologist who was licensed from 1980 to 2017, and is the author of “Focused Positivity: The Path to Success and Peace of Mind.”
