 Letters to the Editor
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:
Regarding the City of Los Angeles’ Extension of the Moratorium
Ms. Lidia Lozano, Los Angeles Mayor’s Office:
I am at a loss for words at your reply to my message below. I have to ask you and the Mayor a few questions since, as you state, “the Mayor has taken decisive action to provide relief to those who need help during this crisis.” My question is: “Are you, Ms. Lozano, doing your part? And is Mayor Garcetti doing his part? Have you both opened the doors to your homes or apartment buildings, and invited in those in need of help during this crisis?” If you and the Mayor have answered “no” to these questions, have you at least donated some of your salaries to these unfortunate people?
It seems we all should do our part, don’t you think? Or is it only we rental property owners that must do so? You ask us to ‘’respect the rights of our tenants” under the Mayor ‘s Emergency Order. Well, that’s the law, but did it occur to the Mayor that might be an unfair or misguided law?
I think those of you over there at City Hall simply do not understand what it is like to be a rental property owner. Do you somehow think that all we do is plot how to get rid of our tenants, who are our customers? Do you really believe that without the Mayor’s intervention and imposed moratorium, we would not have worked things out with our tenants? Do you think we do not respect the residents who live in our properties? Moreover, do you think our only expense is a mortgage? C’mon!
For heaven’s sake, what do you think? Or do you? A reply to this email would be most appreciated. I fear we are on different
wavelengths if not on different planets.
The Mayor’s Office Responds to Member “Larry R.”

This is a challenging moment for our City. Mayor Garcetti has taken decisive action to provide relief to those who need help during this health crisis. We ask that all landlords to understand and respect the rights of their tenants under the Mayor’s emergency orders and the City’s Eviction Moratorium Ordinance, and to give tenants maximum flexibility during this emergency. L.A.’s Housing and Community Investment Department has helpful Frequently Asked Questions, including a factsheet that must be provided along with any notice given to your tenants. Additional information is available for you at the City’s Housing and Community Investment Department (HCID) hotline at (866) 557-7368.
If you are concerned about your ability to keep up with mortgage payments, the L.A. County Disaster Help Center is providing expanded foreclosure protection assistance for homeowners or landlords with 15 or fewer units. If you are a property owner facing financial difficulty, contact the Help Center to learn about available resources for your situation. Call (833) 238-4450 or visit LACountyHelpCenter.org. Under the new state law, there are protections in place for small landlords and homeowners who are unable to pay their mortgage due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To learn more, visit www.landlordtenant.dre.ca.gov. To learn more about what the City is doing to protect Angelenos during this health crisis –– and to access additional resources –– please visit our COVID-19 response website. You can also sign up for regular email updates from the Mayor.
We’re grateful for all you’re doing to help our city overcome this challenge. We will get through this together –– in Los
Angeles, we always do.
- Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti
